There is an interesting read on today's Audiogon forum regarding contemporary tube amplifier offerings and a suggestion that the new don't sound as good as the old. I found it interesting to note that a reader Audiophile remarked that the "Culprit was not the amplifiers but the tubes" further suggesting that new pre-amp tubes are substandard and NOS tubes solve the problem. There is logic in this argument as we have found a more notable delta in better quality pre-amp tubes as apposed to power tubes. Of course every situation can be different but it does make a valid case for trying NOS (New Old Stock) tubes. Cheers from Audioarcan and happy listening.
